Real Madrid are considering extending Gareth Bale's contract in a bid to prevent interest from Red Devils.
The 28-year-old's representatives are due to hold talks with the European champions over the next fortnight.
Manchester United have made Gareth Bale their 'main objective' this summer.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been a long-time admirer of the Welshman and could be ready to prepare a bid for him in the coming days.
Bale is understood to have grown weary with his role at Real Madrid.
The United boss would also have been encouraged by Bale's play-me-or-lose-me comments after the Champions League final on Saturday.
'I was very disappointed to not be starting, I thought that I deserved to start,' Bale said after scoring twice to help Real Madrid to their 13th European crown.
'I want to be playing every week. And if I can't do it at Real Madrid then I will have to do it elsewhere. I just want to enjoy this moment and have a rest. Then I will sit down with everybody at a big table and see what my next move is.'
The 28-year-old has asked his representatives to meet with Real Madrid in the coming weeks to clarify his position.
However, according to Spanish publication AS, it will take a bid of at least £121million for Madrid to even consider selling him this summer.
